Ray Nelson was born in Rotorua and is a Great Great Grandson of Lake Tarawera guide Maata Te Tai Awatea Rangitukehu who lived with her family at Te Ariki pa on the shores of the lake. She and other relatives guided tourists to the famous pink and white terraces before the 1886 Mt Tarawera volcanic eruption – so guiding and offering unique Māori experiences is in Ray’s blood.
Ray has fished the lakes, rivers and streams of the region all of his life. Moving to Taupo in 1995 Ray teamed up with Taupo fly fishing guide Ritchie Buchanan and soon became an accomplished guide requested by many anglers from all around the world.
In 2019 Ray decided to set up his own business, Rotorua and Taupo Fly Fishing Adventures, and started taking customers on his specialised tours.
